What's Better? Fat-Free Cottage Cheese

Here's the second posting out of an article in Muscle & Fitness Magazine Hers, that I read.  It contains myths about 7 foods that you think may be the healthy alternative.  Today, it's fat-free cottage cheese.

The Dirt:

Yes, in about a half a cup of fat-free cottage cheese, you're getting no fat.  Compared to low-fat cottage cheese which gives you about 2 grams (more than half is saturated).

But, with fat-free versions of a typically high fat food, the fat is replaced by something.  That something is almost always sugar.

Sugar causes an increase in your blood sugar levels, which results in your body producing an insulin spike to deal with the problem - which it does by converting the excess sugar to fat.

The Cleanup:

Your best bet is to grab a low-fat cottage cheese.  Just like milk it comes in 2%, (regular is 4%).  You won't get as much sugar, making it a cleaner solution to your diet.

  1. And it isn't 'watery' like the non-fat kind! That is one thing I miss about Germany when we are back in the states for the summer. They have GREAT low fat cottage cheese here. So yum!
